Overview
The Kongolo Biochar Project is designed to convert sustainable biomass into stable biochar, supporting long-term carbon storage, improving soil health, and strengthening rural value chains in Kenya. By shifting from traditional open burning to controlled pyrolysis, Eco2librium provide a reliable carbon removal pathway while driving economic opportunities for local communities.
Why biochar?
Biochar is produced when biomass is heated under limited oxygen conditions, converting part of the biomass carbon into a more stable form. When produced responsibly and applied appropriately, this process transforms volatile organic residues into a durable carbon asset, providing a reliable carbon removal pathway by storing carbon in a form that is highly resistant to decomposition than the original biomass. Beyond carbon storage, biochar can contribute to soil improvement depending on feedstock, production conditions, application rates, soil type, and local agronomic context. Potential benefits may include improved soil structure, better nutrient retention, increased water-holding capacity, and support for soil biological activity.

Standards & MRV
The project is being developed under the CSI Farmer C-Sink and CSI Artisan Pro standards. Eco2librium is developing MRV systems to support documentation of participating farmers, feedstock sourcing, production parameters, biochar quantities, application locations, and carbon accounting data.
